There’s just something magical about cheese. And beer. Add those two ingredients together and you pretty much have the makings for a killer evening. I don’t think I have met a person in my entire life who didn’t like to eat, male or female, and you always seem to get bonus points for having cooking skills in a world that lives off to go boxes or frozen food. So here’s my recipe for Date Night Beer + Cheese Fondue. I think you’ll thank me later.

Beer + Cheese Fondue

1 pound shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

3/4 cup lager beer

1 tablespoon minced garlic

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1 1/2 teaspoons mustard powder

For dipping:

Granny Smith apples, different breads (such as rye or pumpernickel, sausages, etc.)

  1. Mix Cheddar cheese and flour together in a bowl (or ziploc bag if you prefer).

  2. Bring beer to a light boil in a fondue pot; add garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard powder and stir. Gradually stir cheese mixture into beer mixture. Reduce heat to low; cook and stir mixture until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.

Pairs with Sauvignon Blanc (white wine).

Grocery Shopping Tips: I find that Safeway has the best selection of specialty breads and cheeses, although I was ecstatic to find all of these ingredients at Leuders Food Center as well. Skip the Tisdale or Barefoot Sauvignon Blanc wines, they are awful. Look for one made in France or Chile (you can usually find one for under $15 and it will be much more enjoyable). Belle Fouche Liquor store has 10% off wine on Wednesdays, so that would be a great day to pick some up.
